Physicians who are considering or actually making the shift to part-time practice are part of a growing minority. Today, more than one-fifth of the physician workforce practices part time or in nontraditional schedules, and based on recent trends and surveys, those numbers are expected to continue rising. Many practices are accommodating physicians’ requests to adjust their schedules or reduce their clinic hours, in large part because of market conditions. Physicians eyeing part-time practice should consider the impact on their partners and seek colleagues’ input to devise an arrangement that doesn’t unduly burden other physicians or office staff.
